About Lidl

Lidl (Lidl Stiftung & Co. KG) is an international Discount supermarket, that has its roots in Germany. in 1930 Joseph Schwarz  became a partner in company called “Südfrüchte Großhandlung Lidl & Co”, a wholesaler in fruits. He developed the company into a general food wholesaler. The first Lidl discount store was opened in 1973, copying the Aldi concept. Schwarz rigorously removed merchandise that did not sell, and cut costs by keeping the size of the retail outlets as small as possible. In 1977 his son, Dieter Schwarz took over and began to focus their whole business on discount markets, larger supermarkets, and cash and carry wholesale markets.

Expansion

Lidl opened its first UK store in 1994 and has since then successfully expanded their concept to other other countries . They are currently present in over 29 countries and own over 10,000 stores worldwide - of which 3300 stores in Germany.
